1) Definition — “Sabbath” (Heb. šabbāṯ )
Strong’s — H7676 (šabbāṯ שַׁבָּת) = “intermission; cessation; rest; the Sabbath”
From the root H7673 (šāḇaṯ שָׁבַת) “to cease, desist, rest.” In Scripture, the Sabbath marks a God-patterned rhythm of ceasing from ordinary work to remember creation and redemption and to delight in God. (cf. Gen 2:2–3; Exod 20:8–11; Deut 5:12–15)
Self-discovery. Using only the Hebrew Dictionary definition: If “Sabbath” literally means “ceasing,” what kinds of activity (or anxiety) do you most need to cease from in order to remember God?
2) Creation Pattern — God rests and blesses
Creation — Gen 2:2–3; cf. Exod 20:11.
Key texts: The Sabbath is grounded not first in law but in God’s own rhythm.
Self-discovery: How does seeing Sabbath as part of creation (not merely a rule) reshape your attitude toward rest?
3) Pre-Sinai Training — Manna rhythm
Manna school — Exod 16:4–5, 22–30.
Self-discovery: What was God's Job? What was their job? Did they trust God? Did they rest? Did this start before or after the Sinai Law was given by Moses? Were they really content with the situation? Where do you struggle to stop “gathering” because you fear there won’t be enough?
4) Sinai Commandments — Creation & Redemption motives
Decalogue — Exod. 20:8–11, 23:12; Deut. 5:12–15.
Self-discovery: Where is the Sabbath grounded in as described by Exod 20:8–11? Where is the Sabbath grounded in as described by Deut. 5:12–15? What does Creation and Egypt have to do with it? Who in your world needs your intentional planning so they too can rest (employees, family, “outsiders”, even creation)?
5) Covenant Sign — Knowing the LORD by restful holiness
Sign — Exod. 31:12–17; cf. Ezek. 20:12, 20.
Self-discovery: What sign/rhythm could the people of the region recognise that the people of Israel belonged to God? How often was this done? What weekly practices signal to others (and your own heart) that your identity is in the LORD?
6) Festivals, Sabbatical Years & Jubilee — Rest scaled up
Calendar of mercy — Lev. 23; Lev. 25:1–55.
Self-discovery: Who or what was affected by the sabbath in these verses? Did it just affect a day, a week, or a year? What was the time frame/rhythms? What festivals (moedim) were shaped by the sabbath? What was a Jubilee release? What/who did it affect? Imagine if your time and money were shaped by Sabbath-Jubilee values, what would change?
7) Warnings & Wisdom — Guard the gates; delight in the day
Prophetic calls — Num 15:32–36; Neh 13:15–22; Isa 56:2–7; Isa 58:13–14; Jer 17:19–27.
Self-discovery: Is it just Israel that God includes in the Sabbath? Two sides to every coin. One side are warnings. The other side calls for you to make the sabbath a delight. What are the warnings? What things are delights? What concrete boundary would help you “call the Sabbath a delight” rather than just a restriction?
8) Jesus & the Sabbath — Lord of the Sabbath; mercy over sacrifice
Messiah’s authority — Matt 12:1–14; Mark 2:23–28; 3:1–6; Luke 4:16; 6:1–11; 13:10–17; 14:1–6; John 5:1–18; 7:22–24; 9:1–16.
Self-discovery: What things did Jesus do on the Sabbath? What did he not do on the Sabbath? What roles has mercy and restoration have in the Sabbath? What authority does Jesus have over the Sabbath? 2x sided coin - How does the Sabbath balance the Law with mercy and life? What things did Jesus do to demonstrate mercy? 2x sides of the coin - sabbath and man. How does that work? When does “rule-keeping” in your life eclipse the law of love that Jesus highlights on the Sabbath? At the end of Matthew verses, what was the cost of what Jesus did for that man? What might it cost you?
9) Fulfillment — Jesus as our Great Sabbath rest
Rest in Christ — Matt 11:28–30; Heb 3:7–4:13; Col 2:16–17; Rom 14:5–9.
Self-discovery: Does Jesus tell people to cease tasks and to go somewhere to rest? Does he give a list of dos and don'ts that must be obeyed? Where does he ask the weary to go? What is his burden and yoke like? What does Hebrews speak of for God's people and sabbath? What two things do they need to enter into that rest? (Two things that make up another 2x sided coin.) What does Paul say about a holy day observance being a shadow of the substance of who? What must believers not do? In practice, how do you “cease” from self-reliance and enter Christ’s rest during your week? Can you enter into his rest even when your world is falling apart? No matter how crazy it gets? If so, how? What does the bible say about a particular day being set aside for the Lord?
10) Early Church Patterns — Synagogue, Sabbaths, and the Lord’s Day
Rhythms — Acts 13:14, 42–44; 16:13; 17:2; 18:4; 20:7; 1 Cor 16:2; Rev 1:10.
Self-discovery:
What was Paul's rhythm? Where did he always go first? What two types of people would Paul find there? What day was that? (What day do Jews go to the Synagogue?) When he was rejected by the Jews who else did he go to? What was the first day after that day in the Synagogue? What day of the week was that? What day did Christ rise again? What day do we call the 'Lord's Day' because of that resurrection? What do some Christians do on the Lord's Day? How might resurrection rhythm (first-day worship) and Sabbath (7th day) rest together shape a healthy week for you?
11) Implementation Today — Principles for practice
Spoiler Alert ⚠ Stop Here!
Principles — Rest, worship, mercy, justice, delight. Started with God in Genesis, ended with God as Jesus Christ.
Plan ceasing (work & commerce), pursue worship, practice mercy, extend rest to all in your care, and cultivate delight in God. Anchor your rhythm in both creation and redemption. (Exod 20:8–11; Deut 5:12–15; Isa 58:13–14; Mark 2:27–28) Remember who the REAL sabbath is!
Self-discovery: What two changes this week would most help you keep Sabbath as delight and witness? Who are you going to be: a person who hold one day a week as a sabbath, or every day as a sabbath? (Remember the warning in scripture that says to be fully convinced of this and what happens if you sit on the fence.) What happens to people who have heard the word and know it, but who disbelieves and or disobeys? What do you think it means for YOU to rest in Jesus? Finally, who are you going to share this with?
