Facilitator Notes - Mormonism (LDS)

These facilitator notes help you guide a clear, kind, and Bible-anchored discussion about the beliefs of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS or Mormons). They support the main article and break the ideas into simple teaching blocks suitable for mixed backgrounds, ESL learners, and cross-faith conversations.

1. Purpose of the Session

The goal is to show the difference between biblical Christianity and LDS teaching. Focus on comparing ideas gently and clearly, using Scripture as the foundation.

Emphasise respect: many LDS people are sincere, family-centred, and committed. The aim is truth with grace, not argument.

2. Overview of Key Differences (Quick Map)
  • God: Bible – Eternal Creator; LDS – an exalted man with a body.
  • Jesus: Bible – Eternal God; LDS – spirit-brother of all humans.
  • Gospel: Bible – grace alone; LDS – grace + works + temple system.
  • Scripture: Bible alone; LDS – Bible + Book of Mormon + 2 others.
  • Salvation: Bible – through Christ’s finished work; LDS – multi-level exaltation.
3. Joseph Smith – Background for Facilitators

Give a simple, factual outline. Avoid attacking the person; focus on the claims.

  • Born 1805, New York, during a time of revival and confusion.
  • Claimed God and Jesus appeared to him physically in 1820.
  • Said all churches were wrong and corrupted.
  • Claimed an angel (Moroni) showed him gold plates in a hill.
  • Translated them using “seer stones.”
  • Produced The Book of Mormon (1830).

Key facilitator note: highlight Galatians 1:8–9 — even an angel cannot bring a new gospel.

4. Extra Scriptures (Bible + 3 LDS books)

LDS teaching uses:

  • Book of Mormon
  • Doctrine & Covenants
  • Pearl of Great Price

The facilitator can gently explain:

  • 2 Timothy 3:16–17 – Scripture already fully equips us.
  • Galatians 1:8–9 – Warning about new revelations.
  • Revelation 22:18–19 – Strong warning against adding to God’s words.
5. Who is God? (Facilitator Notes)

LDS teaching: God the Father has a physical body, was once a man, and progressed to godhood.

Biblical teaching: God is eternal, uncreated, Spirit, and alone is God.

  • Isaiah 43:10 – “Before Me no god was formed.”
  • Isaiah 44:6 – “I am the first and the last.”
  • John 4:24 – “God is spirit.”

Teaching tip: Say, “Let’s compare what each teaches. Which one matches the Bible?”

6. Who is Jesus? (Facilitator Notes)

LDS teaching: Jesus is the first-born spirit child of Heavenly Father and Heavenly Mother, and spirit-brother to all humans.

Biblical teaching: Jesus is eternal, uncreated, fully God, fully man.

  • John 1:1–3 – All things made through Him.
  • Colossians 1:15–17 – By Him all things were created.
  • John 20:28 – “My Lord and my God.”
  • Colossians 2:9 – Full deity in bodily form.

Facilitator tip: Focus on identity. “Who is Jesus?” This opens the whole topic safely.

7. Salvation & Exaltation

LDS teaching has a multi-level system: faith + works + temple rituals + obedience lead to “exaltation” (becoming a god and having your own spirit children).

Biblical teaching: salvation is a gift by grace through faith in Christ alone.

  • Ephesians 2:8–9 – Not by works.
  • Romans 3:24 – Justified freely.
  • Hebrews 7:25 – Jesus saves completely.

Key contrast: “exaltation” vs “eternal life in Christ.”

8. Temple Marriage & Eternal Families

LDS teaching: eternal marriage in a temple is required for exaltation. Families are sealed “forever.”

Biblical teaching:

  • Matthew 22:30 – No marriage in the resurrection.
  • Luke 20:35–36 – People will be “like the angels.”

Facilitator note: Handle gently. Family is deeply valued in LDS culture.

9. Baptism for the Dead

LDS teaching: living members can be baptised on behalf of dead people to help them progress spiritually.

Biblical teaching:

  • Hebrews 9:27 – “Appointed once to die, then judgement.”
  • 2 Corinthians 5:10 – Each person judged for their own life.

Use this facilitator sentence: “Only one verse in the Bible mentions this phrase — and Paul does not command it, explain it, or encourage it.”

10. Genealogy & the LDS Ancestry Project

LDS culture places a strong emphasis on tracing family lines back as far as possible to perform temple rituals for ancestors (“proxy ordinances”).

Facilitator Scripture:

  • 1 Timothy 1:4 – Avoid endless genealogies.

Teaching tip: Discuss why Scripture warns against systems that create spiritual pressure and fear around family duty.

11. How to Respond to LDS Friends
  • Stay calm and respectful.
  • Ask questions (“Who is Jesus in your belief?”).
  • Use Scripture, not feelings.
  • Keep the conversation centred on Christ.
  • Avoid getting lost in details or debates.

Encourage people to pray for their LDS friends by name.

📌 Summary

The key difference is the identity of God and Jesus and the nature of the gospel. The Bible presents an eternal Creator, a fully divine Christ, and salvation by grace alone — without temple rituals, extra scriptures, or exaltation levels.
