Christadelphians - what does the Bible say about the Holy Spirit?

For Seekers of the Truth — Let the Bible speak for itself!

This article helps you explore what the Bible says about the Holy Spirit using a simple self-discovery Bible method called SOS. For each block of Scripture, ask:

  • S — What does the passage SAY?
  • O — What must I OBEY or apply?
  • S — Who can I SHARE this with?

Each section below asks a question and provides Scriptures so you can discover the answers directly from the Bible.

Question 1 — Is the Holy Spirit personal?
Read
  • John 14:16–17
  • John 14:26
  • John 16:13–15
Ask (SOS)
  • SAY: What actions does the Spirit perform in these verses (teach, remind, guide, speak, hear, declare)?
  • OBEY: If the Spirit guides into truth, how should I respond when Scripture corrects me?
  • SHARE: Who needs encouragement to read these passages slowly and let the Bible define the Spirit?
  • Is the Spirit treated like a “someone” who teaches and speaks, or like an impersonal force?
  • In John 16:13–15, who “speaks” and “declares”?

Question 2 — Can the Holy Spirit speak, choose, and decide?
Read
  • Acts 13:2
  • Acts 15:28
  • 1 Corinthians 12:11
Ask (SOS)
  • SAY: Who is speaking in Acts 13:2? What does He say?
  • SAY: In 1 Corinthians 12:11, who “apportions” gifts “as He wills”?
  • OBEY: If the Spirit assigns and directs ministry, how should I hold my plans before God?
  • SHARE: Who can I invite to read Acts 13:2 out loud and answer: “Who is talking?”
  • Do these verses describe will, intention, and decision-making?

Question 3 — Can the Holy Spirit be resisted, grieved, or lied to?
Read
  • Ephesians 4:30
  • Isaiah 63:10
  • Acts 5:3–4
Ask (SOS)
  • SAY: In Ephesians 4:30, what does it mean to “grieve” the Spirit?
  • SAY: In Acts 5:3–4, who is being lied to? What does Peter call that lie?
  • OBEY: If the Spirit can be grieved, what sins in this context must I put away? (Ephesians 4:25–32)
  • SHARE: Who needs to see Acts 5:3–4 and answer: “Why does lying to the Spirit equal lying to God?”
  • Can an impersonal force be “grieved” or be the direct object of a lie?

Question 4 — Why is the Holy Spirit named alongside the Father and the Son?
Read
  • Matthew 28:19
  • 2 Corinthians 13:14
  • John 15:26
Ask (SOS)
  • SAY: In Matthew 28:19, why are Father, Son, and Holy Spirit named together?
  • SAY: In 2 Corinthians 13:14, what blessing is spoken from the Lord Jesus, the love of God, and the fellowship of the Spirit?
  • OBEY: If fellowship with the Spirit is real, what habits help me walk in step with Him?
  • SHARE: Who might benefit from reading Matthew 28:19 slowly and asking: “Why these three together?”
  • Is the Spirit treated as a mere tool, or as a distinct “who” alongside the Father and the Son?

Question 5 — What does the Holy Spirit do in salvation and new life?
Read
  • John 3:5–8
  • Romans 8:9–11
  • Titus 3:5–7
Ask (SOS)
  • SAY: In John 3:5–8, what does it mean to be born of the Spirit?
  • SAY: In Romans 8:9–11, what does it mean that the Spirit “dwells” in believers?
  • OBEY: If the Spirit gives life, how should I put sin to death and live as God’s child? (Romans 8:12–14)
  • SHARE: Who needs hope that God truly changes people from the inside out?
  • Do these texts describe the Spirit as an impersonal influence, or as a living presence?

Question 6 — If the Holy Spirit is not personal… how do these verses make sense?
Read
  • Romans 8:26–27
  • Hebrews 10:29
  • Acts 16:6–7
Ask (SOS)
  • SAY: In Romans 8:26–27, who intercedes and has “a mind”?
  • SAY: In Hebrews 10:29, who can be “outraged” or “insulted”?
  • SAY: In Acts 16:6–7, who forbids and redirects the apostles?
  • OBEY: If God can redirect ministry plans, how should I pray and plan?
  • SHARE: Who can I invite to read Acts 16 aloud and ask: “Who stopped them?”
  • What kind of being intercedes, has a mind, can be insulted, and can forbid?

Take your time. Read carefully. Let Scripture answer Scripture. Ask what the text says, how it should be obeyed, and who you might share it with.

What else are they not telling you or got wrong?
