Zuko Explains - "Christianese" (A–Z Glossary of Big Words)

Zukos Glossary

Zuko explains big words that Churchy Christians like to use and some common bible terms you read in scripture.

Example: Justification = Put right — God declares us right by faith in Jesus.

A
Abba = Dad
Intimate way to speak to God as Father (like “Dad”).
Abide = Stay
Remain connected to Jesus in daily life.
Abomination = Disgusting wrong
Something God strongly rejects as evil.
Abrahamic Covenant = Promise
God’s promise to bless all families through Abraham.
Advent = Arrival
Time remembering Jesus’ coming and looking to his return.
Amen = Yes/True/absolutely
A way to say “that’s true” or “let it be so.”
Angel = Messenger
Heavenly or human messenger—context decides.
Anoint = Set apart
Mark someone for God’s purpose (often with oil).
Apologetics = Giving an answer to someone. It means giving clear, thoughtful reasons for what you believe and why . Showing that faith in God and the Bible is reasonable and trustworthy.
Apostle = Sent one
Someone sent out by Jesus with his message.
Atonement = Covering
Jesus’ death dealing with sin so we can be close to God.
B
Babel/Babylon = Empire/pride
Symbol of human pride and systems against God.
Baptism = To dunk/Immersion
Going fully under water to show new life with Jesus.
Beatitudes = Blessings
Jesus’ ‘happy/blessed’ sayings that flip normal values.
Begotten = Uniquely born
Old way to say ‘one-of-a-kind Son’ (about Jesus).
Born Again = New start
God gives new spiritual life by the Spirit.
Bride of Christ = God’s people
Picture of the church loved and committed to Jesus.
C
Call = Invite
God inviting someone to follow/serve.
Calvary = Skull hill
Place where Jesus was crucified (Golgotha).
Canon = Rule/list
The set of books the church recognizes as Scripture.
Christ/Messiah = Anointed king
God’s chosen king—Jesus.
Confess = Say the truth
Admit sin to God, or openly say Jesus is Lord.
Conversion = Turnaround (see Repent)
Turning from sin to God through Jesus.
Covenant = Binding promise
Serious promise that forms a loyal relationship.
Creed = We believe...
Short statement of core beliefs.
Cross = Execution stake
Where Jesus died to save us.
Crucifixion = Nailed death
Roman execution by nailing to a cross.
D
Disciple = Student/Learner/follower
Someone who learns from and imitates Jesus.
Doctrine = Teaching
What the church believes and teaches.
Doxology = Praise line
Short words giving praise to God.
E
Ecclesiology = Church-study
Study of the church—what it is and does.
Ecumenical = Across all churches
Working together across different Christian groups.
Elder = Overseer
Local church shepherd/leader.
Elohim = God
A Hebrew word for God. Actually it is the plural form - "Gods". 
Emmanuel = God-with-us
Title for Jesus meaning God has come near.
Epistle = Letter
A letter in the New Testament to churches/people.
Eschatology = Last things, End Days
Study of Jesus’ return and the future.
Exodus = Way out
God rescuing Israel from Egypt—big rescue story.
Expiation = Removal
Sin taken away because of Jesus’ sacrifice.
F
Faith = Trust
Relying on God and acting on his word.
Fellowship = Together-life
Sharing life, help, and mission as God’s family.
Flesh = Old nature
Our self-centered way without the Spirit.
Forgiveness = Wipe clean
God cancels sin-debt; we do the same to others.
Fruit of the Spirit = Good character that comes out when you follow Jesus
Love, joy, peace, and the rest produced by the Spirit.
G
Gentile = Non‑Jew
Anyone not ethnically Jewish.
Gifts of the Spirit = Spirit given tools
Abilities the Spirit gives to people build up the church.
Glorify = Show greatness
Show how good and great God is.
Gospel = Good news
Jesus’ saving life, death, and resurrection.
Grace = Free favor
God’s free kindness to undeserving people.
Great Commission = Go and make
Jesus’ send-out order to make disciples of all nations.
H
Hallelujah = Praise God
Hebrew shout of praise to the LORD.
Heresy = Twisted teaching
Teaching that breaks from core Christian truth.
Hermeneutics = Bible interpretation
A systematic way to read and apply the Bible (SOS).
Holiness = Set‑apart (especialy set apart for God)
Being set apart for God and doing what’s right in God's eyes.
Holy Spirit = God’s Spirit (aka Holy Ghost)
God present with us to give new life and power. One of the three personalities that make up God
Hosanna = Save now
Prayerful shout asking God to save.
Hypocrisy = Two‑faced
Saying one thing, living another.
I
Idol = Fake god 
Anything we treat as more important than God. (Literally means "empty")
Imago Dei = God‑image
People reflect God’s image and worth.
Incarnation = God became human
God the Son became man in Jesus.
Inerrancy = No error (Bible)
Belief that the Bible is true in all it affirms.
Inspiration (Scripture) = God‑breathed
God guided the writers so the Bible is his word.
Intercession = Praying for others
Praying to God on someone’s behalf.
J
Jerusalem = Holy city. Capital of Judea (now Israel).
City central to the Bible history; where Jesus died/rose. Upon his return there will be a new Jerusalem where God will dwell with us. 
Jubilee = Freedom year.
Old law: debts canceled, land reset, mercy lived.
Justification = Put right
God declares a sinner ‘right’ through Jesus by faith.
K
Kerygma = Core message
The basic preached message about Jesus.
Kingdom of God = God’s rule
God’s reign on earth as in heaven, begun in Jesus.
Koinonia = Shared life
New Testament word for fellowship/partnership. (It means a deep commitment to one another)
L
Lamb of God = Sin‑bearer
Title for Jesus—he takes away sin.
Law (Torah) = Instruction
God’s instruction given through Moses.
Legalism = Rules over grace
Trying to earn standing by rules instead of grace.
Liturgy = Service order
The pattern of prayers/readings in worship.
Lord’s Supper = Communion/meal
Bread and cup remembering Jesus’ death. AKA Eucharist, Holy Communion, and the Blessed Sacrament.
M
Maranatha = Lord, come
Prayer asking Jesus to return.
Meditate (Biblical) = Chew on
Slowly repeat/ponder God’s words.
Mercy = Kind rescue (Hebrew is 'Hesed' go here for the article)
Not getting the penalty we deserve.
Messiah/Christ = Anointed king
God’s chosen king—Jesus.
Mission = Sent purpose
Joining God’s work in word and deed.
Mystery (NT) = Revealed secret
God’s plan now made known in Jesus.
N
New Birth = New life
Another way to say ‘born again.’
New Covenant = New promise, new contract
God’s promised new‑heart relationship through Jesus.
Nicolaitan = Power‑party
A group in Revelation—name hints at dominating others.
O
Oath = Solemn promise
Serious promise calling God as witness.
Ordination = Setting apart
Publicly recognizing someone for ministry service.
Orthodoxy = Right belief
Holding to the historic core truths.
P
Parable = Story picture, analogy
Short story that teaches truth by surprise.
Passover = Rescue meal
Meal remembering God’s rescue from Egypt.
Pastor/Shepherd = Caretaker
One who cares for and guides a church.
Patriarchs = Founding fathers
Abraham, Isaac, Jacob—the early ancestors.
Pentecost = Fiftieth
Festival day when the Spirit was poured out.
Persecution = Suffering for faith
Being mistreated because of Jesus.
Pharisee = Strict party
Religious group focused on strict law‑keeping.
Prophet = Spokesperson
One who speaks God’s message to people.
Propitiation = Wrath satisfied
Jesus bore judgment so we are welcomed.
Providence = God’s care
God guiding and providing in all things.
Pseudepigraphical writings = A pseudepigraphical work is one that is written in the name or style of another person, often to honor them or carry on their teaching.  Its purpose is not necessarily to deceive, but to express respect or continuity. For example: Some ancient writings were composed “in the voice of” Paul in later letters to the Corinthians, The Gospel of Thomas, or the Book of Enoch to preserve their memory and provide, wisdom and uphold traditions.  Some pseudepigraphical work was absolutely written to deceive people into following false teachings.  Such was the work of the Gnostics. 
 
Q
Quiet Time = Time with God
Personal time to pray and read the Bible.
R
Rapture = Caught up
Being gathered to Jesus when he returns (views differ).
Reconciliation = Made friends
Enemies brought back into friendship.
Redemption = Buy back
Jesus pays the cost to free us.
Repent = Turn around
Turn from sin to God.
Resurrection = Life again
Jesus rose bodily; believers will too.
Righteousness = Right standing
God’s rightness shared with us in Christ.
Ruach = Breath/Spirit
Hebrew word for breath, wind, or Spirit.
S
Sabbath = Rest day
Set day to rest and trust God.
Sacrament = Holy sign
Outward sign of God’s inward grace (e.g., baptism).
Sadducee = Temple party
Group that denied resurrection/angels.
Saints = God’s people
All believers set apart for God (not just heroes).
Sanctification = Growing holy
God makes us more like Jesus over time.
Scripture = Holy writings
The Bible—Old and New Testaments.
Shekinah = Glory presence
Term for God’s glorious presence among his people.
Sin = Miss the mark
Falling short of God’s good way.
Soteriology = Salvation‑study
Study of how God saves in Christ.
Sovereignty = God in charge
God rules over everything.
Spiritual Warfare = Invisible battle
Resisting evil powers by God’s strength.
Synagogue = Gathering house
Local meeting place for Jewish worship/teaching.
T
Tabernacle = Tent temple/Meeting Place. A movable worship tent before the Temple was built in Jerusalem.
Testament = Covenant = Promise = Contract
A formal promise; Old and New Testaments.
Theology = God‑study
Thinking carefully about God and his ways.
Tithe = Tenth
Giving ten percent as worship and support.
Transfiguration = Bright change
Jesus shining on the mountain—glory revealed. (Jesus showing us what he is really like.)
Trinity = Three‑in‑One
One God—Father, Son, Spirit.
Typology = Picture pattern
Earlier people/events pointing to Christ.
U
Unity (Church) = Togetherness
Different people made one in Christ.
Upper Room = Upstairs room
Place of Last Supper and early prayer.
V
Virgin Birth = Miracle birth
Jesus conceived by the Spirit, born of Mary.
Vocation = Calling
Your everyday work as service to God.
W
Works (of the law) = Rule‑keeping
Trying to be right with God by rules.
Worship = Worth‑showing = Service
Giving God honor with heart, words, and life.
Wrath (of God) = Right anger
God’s just anger against evil.  The final punishment that was long overdue
X
Xenodochy = Guest‑welcome
Old word for welcoming strangers (hospitality).
Y
Yahweh = I AM
God’s personal name revealed to Moses. The Hebrew tetragram "YHWH" יהוה
Yoke = Carrying tool
Wood bar for joining work animals together as a team; picture of Jesus’ way/teaching.
Z
Zeal = Hot energy
Eager energy for God’s honor.
Zion = Jerusalem hill
Poetic name for Jerusalem/God’s people.
