Praying hands.

Important Note: This article was designed to fit in the last third of the three thirds meeting. Usually called “Multiplication” or “Look Ahead”. These exercises can be completed after the group has first done a self-discovery Bible study on the passage. It is not to be used as a teaching medium but instead as a memory reinforcement for what they have already discovered for themselves.

The Five "P"s in the template of how Jesus wanted us to pray.

Jesus taught us how He wants us to pray in Matthew 6:9–13. To go along with the "Left-Handed Gospel," here is a way to remember how to pray using your right hand, starting with the thumb that is closest to you when praying and moving along each finger:

Thumb

Praise

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name." (verse 9)

What can you say to God about His greatness, the things He has done, or your love for Him?

Index Finger (pointing finger)

Purpose

“Your kingdom come; your will be done on earth as it is in heaven." (verse 10)

What can you say to God about His Kingdom, His plan for the world, or your part in His work?

His Kingdom:

You can pray for:

  • Your leaders that God appointed.
  • Help with social justice opportunities for widows, orphans, the fatherless, the sick, etc.
  • The Lost
  • Other followers of Christ (the Body)

Your purpose in this Kingdom on Earth is:

You can pray for:

  • Your 'Far from God' list
  • Your 'Close to God' list
  • Your family and friends
  • Opportunities to speak with these groups and show them Jesus
  • Ask for boldness to obey, to speak at the right time, and to use the right words with gentleness and respect.
  • Ask for opportunities to help your neighbours (especially the widows, fatherless, sick, and poor).

Middle finger

Provision

“Give us this day our daily bread” (verse 11).

  • What can you say to God about your everyday needs, particularly those of others?

Ring Finger

Pardon

“Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors." (verse 12)

  • What can you say to God about your sins and about your forgiveness of other people?

Little Finger

Protection

“And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one” (verse 13).

  • What can you say to God about protecting yourself from temptation and Satan's influence?
  • Ask for help to put on the full armour of God and claim His promises. Ephesians 6:10-20
  • Ask for good mentors in your life to show you how to live a life set apart for God and to steer you away from the more obvious traps.

It is also good to include the phrase “in Jesus’ name” because Jesus makes possible our connection with God. End with "amen,” as it expresses our agreement with God. (It is the same as saying, "I really mean it," or for an Aussie to say, "Too Right Mate!")
