Find your Blind Spot. There are many ways to find your blind spot. The first is using a Card or sheet of paper with a dot and a cross on it. All you do is hold the paper out in front of you (say holding the Cross closest to your hand, it doesn’t matter) Then cover your eye with the other hand. Look only at say the Dot (the one closest to your nose and furthermost from your hand, swap it to the cross if your paper is the other way around). Don’t look at the Cross. Slowly move the card closer to you while still looking only at the Dot. Get them to shout out when the cross disappears. Warn them to go very slowly as their eye will try and "slip" over to the cross just as it starts to disappear. The cross will come back again if they keep moving the card forward.
Swap the card over and try the other hand and the other eye. Yep, you're blind to a spot right in front of you (in both eyes) and you don’t even know it!
You were fearfully and wonderfully made did you know that? The 'Optical Disc' is the part of your eye where all of your nerves and blood vessels go through your eye and attach to your brain. You are blind in that spot but your brain cuts and pastes the image from your other eye to guess what might be there in that blank spot. When it can’t do that, because you have blocked the other eye, it tries to “clone” stamp some of the background over the missing area so as not the alarm you. (you may have felt a little uneasy when you tried to look at the Dot whilst you were getting the cross close to the blank area. Your brain was trying to keep you from noticing it.) It has done this since you were born and you have probably never known it!
We all have blind spots and in other areas of our lives too we just don’t realise that we have them. We need caring people in our lives to help point them out to us as well….
Launch into some sort of appropriate Gospel Message showing them the biggest blind spot they might have in their life!
Discipleship is also like helping people find their blind spots in their lives if they are already believers by the way.
Below are links to a picture of an A4/Foolscap page of white paper with a Dot and a Cross on it. (The colour does not matter.):
Blind Spot Card (link coming soon). There is no magic just make one for yourself. The link is just in case you don't have a card or paper & you might be able to use your phone.
Below is a demonstration video of the Blind Spot Card Game:
Blind Spot Card Game (link coming soon)
Below is a video demonstration of another way to do it without a card. It can be a little harder and the brain can get used to it and cut and paste it easier after a while. (Can work well for the first time at least.)
Blind Spot Thumb Game (link coming soon)
All can be used to break ice in Disciple Making Workshops by the way.
Have fun!!
