In the previous article, we asked whether the world needs escape or rescue — and we saw that Christianity offers rescue through Jesus Christ. Now we come to an even more personal question: what kind of future are we actually hoping for?
Is the deepest human longing to fade peacefully out of existence — or to live, fully known and fully loved, forever?
🕯️ Two Visions of the End: Candle to Candle
A common Buddhist image for rebirth is one candle lighting another. The flame continues, but the original candle is gone. There is continuity, but no enduring self.
Enlightenment is often described as the final extinguishing of the flame — desire ended, identity released, the cycle stopped.
For some, this sounds peaceful. For others, it feels like quiet disappearance. What is certain is this: the story ends with the self no longer continuing.
❤️ Love: Compassion or Self-Giving?
Buddhism rightly values compassion, kindness, and care for others. These qualities reduce suffering and create harmony.
Christianity speaks of a different kind of love — not just compassion, but self-giving love. Love that moves toward the broken. Love that stays when it costs something. Love that sacrifices itself for the good of another.
This kind of love is not merely an emotion or a practice. It is how God relates to us.
👨👩👧 Why Our Deepest Relationships Matter
The relationships we treasure most are not the ones we detach from — they are the ones we would give ourselves for.
Parents do not love their children by loosening attachment. Husbands and wives do not deepen love by becoming indifferent. Love grows through commitment, sacrifice, and presence.
Christianity teaches that this human love reflects something true about God — not something we must grow out of.
🌱 The Christian Promise: Life That Continues
Christianity does not promise extinction of desire. It promises the healing of desire.
Eternal life is not endless time floating somewhere else. It is restored life — bodies renewed, relationships healed, justice completed, and God living with His people.
The Bible describes a future with a new heaven and a new earth, where God dwells with humanity — not distant, not abstract, but present.
🌅 Enlightenment or Fulfilment?
One of the quiet difficulties within Buddhism is that there is no single, agreed description of what enlightenment ultimately is. Some describe peace. Others speak of non-existence. Others refuse to define it at all.
Christianity is not vague about its hope. It is concrete: life, resurrection, restored creation, and a personal God who remains with His people forever.
This is not escape from being human. It is humanity finally made whole.
The question before us is not which path sounds calmer, but which future truly answers the longings we already carry. In the final article, we will speak plainly about the good news of Jesus — and the invitation He offers to anyone who longs for forgiveness, truth, and life that does not fade. An abundant life, pressed down and overflowing.
